GUIDELINES FOR OIL SEAL
INSTALLATION
FORM 97140302 11/04
This kit contains premium quality components, that,
when properly installed, will provide years of trouble
free performance. Care must be taken to insure that all
mounting, mating, parallel or bore surface areas are wire
brushed clean to remove all foreign material from the
seal area. Extra care in surface preparation and attention
to proper placement will help to insure professional
results. Keep seals in the dust free bag until ready for
installation.
All of the following seals may not be included, or
required, in the particular set you have purchased.
REAR MAIN CRANKSHAFT SEALS
This type of seal must be thoroughly saturated with
engine oil prior to installation. Dry cranking on this seal
will rapidly decrease service life.
Full round, or radial type seals, may require special
installation tools, to properly position seal for use.
The single lip split seal type is designed with two
halves that may not be equal in length. The upper half
installs in the engine block and the lower half installs in
the main cap, with each half meeting at the main cap to
block parting line. The tapered, or ramp, side of the seal
lip, must face inboard, for proper functioning. Apply
additional oil to crankshaft seal area, prior to main cap
installation.
The dual lip split seal type is designed with primary
and secondary, or dust lip molded into the finished part.
The primary lip is angled toward the crankcase and
incorporates helix lines that pump excessive oil back
into the engine. The dust lip helps to prevent outside
contaminates from entering the primary seal area. Again,
it is wise to apply additional oil to crankshaft seal area,
prior to main cap installation.
REAR MAIN BEARING CAP SEALS
This type of seal comes in various shapes and material
composition, depending on application. The left and right
sides may vary slightly in length or shape and should be
compared before inserting. If your set contains rubber
rails and steel pins, the steel pin is used to tension the
rubber rail tight against the oil source area. Each of the
materials used are designed for moderate swell, when
exposed to engine oil, in order to properly conform to
the seal cavity.
OIL PAN END SEALS
If more than one front or rear seal is contained in your
set, test fit for proper selection. It is important to obtain
a smooth, uniform thickness from the seal to the gasket
surface area.
CAM OR TIMING COVER SEALS
These rotational shaft seals are usually dual lip design,
with the primary sealing lip being tensioned by a garter
spring. A moderate press fit secures the seal in place,
using evenly distribute pressure. A small amount of
gasket sealer may be brushed in the bore, prior to
installation, to prevent oil seepage.
VALVE STEM/GUIDE OIL SEALS
O-ring type - designed to keep the oil that is collected
in the retainer dish, from flowing down the valve stem.
Compress the valve spring/retainer assembly and install
the o-ring seal into the lower most groove on the valve
stem. Install valve locks, keepers, and release tension on
valve spring. If stem to guide tolerances have not been
returned to factory specifications, it is recommended that
an umbrella, or positive type, seal be used in conjunction
with the o-ring seal.
INTAKE MANIFOLD END SEALS
If more than one front or rear seal is included in your set,
test fit for proper selection. It is important to obtain
a smooth, uniform thickness from the seal, to the gasket
surface area. Some end seals are notched, in order to
receive the side rail gasket, other seals have a uniform
taper, or step, that flows into the gasket surface. A
small amount of RTV sealant should be used for extra
protection, where the seal meets the gasket surface area.
Care must be taken when installing the intake manifold,
be sure the end seals have not shifted from their proper
sealing position. Visual inspection, of front and rear
seal positioning should be confirmed, prior to torque
being applied to intake bolts.
